# Quick Start

### Overview

If you already use automatic tuning or harmonization tools, many of Evoke’s core concepts and workflows will feel familiar. Beyond that, Evoke adds comprehensive Resynthesis controls to create a wide range of vocal characters and transform your sound in new ways. Of course, you can also access these capabilities immediately through Evoke’s preset library.

### Initial Setup

When you open a new instance, it’s important to set up Evoke to match your input. This provides the information it needs for optimal pitch tracking and harmonization.

Evoke’s pitch tracking is intended for monophonic sources. A vocal is typical, but any pitched sound works. If you’d like to use Evoke on non-pitched or polyphonic sources, [**Global Modes**](https://manual.minimal.audio/evoke-manual/global-modes), such as **MIDI Instrument** and **External**, can be used to bypass pitch tracking.

1. **Set the scale.** In the **Keyboard Panel** (bottom-right), choose **Root Note** and **Scale Type** to match your project. You can customize the scale by toggling notes on the keyboard.
2. **Set Pitch Range.** To the left of the keyboard, set **Pitch Range** to optimize tracking. When audio is playing, a purple indicator highlights the recommended range. Select it to optimize Evoke for your input.

### Using Presets

After setting Evoke’s scale and pitch range, follow these steps to start exploring presets and make them your own.

1. **Load a preset.** click the preset name in the center of the **Top Bar** to open the browser. Open **Minimal Picks** (a collection of our favorites) and load a preset.
2. **Shape with Macros.** Adjust the two **Macro** knobs on the left side of the **Modulation Bar**. They can dramatically shape the preset and help you tailor it to your source.
3. **Blend the result.** use the **Dry Wet** slider (above the scale controls) to mix the processed signal with your original input.

### Designing Presets

Here are common first steps for creating your own presets in Evoke.

1. **Choose a character mode.** Use the icon dropdown in the top-left of the **Resynth View** to select a resynthesis mode, ranging from natural to highly synthetic. These modes have a major impact on how Evoke is resynthesizing the signal.
2. **Adjust Retune Speed and Amount.** In the center of the **Resynth View**, set **Retune Speed** and **Amount** to achieve the tuning that suits your style. These are the controls commonly found in automatic tuning software. Faster speed settings produce the popular hard-tuning effect.
3. **Go deeper.** Adjust Resolution and Formant, add harmony voices, and load effects in the **Effects View**. Read on to learn about the full feature set and sound-shaping capabilities of Evoke!
