# MIDI Effect Routing

### Overview

Evoke uses MIDI to control the current scale or notes via [**Global Modes**](/evoke-manual/global-modes.md), and to trigger modulators so they respond to note-on messages—enabling deeper, performance-driven interactions within the plugin.

Routing MIDI to an effect varies by DAW. Steps for common DAWs are outlined below. For detailed instructions, consult your DAW’s manual.

### Ableton Live

1. Insert Evoke on the audio source track (the vocal/melody).

2. Create a MIDI track and program or play notes (clip or keyboard).

3. In the MIDI track’s **MIDI To** section, select the audio track that hosts Evoke.

4. Set Evoke to **MIDI Track / MIDI Instrument** in the Global Mode. Enable **Monitor: In** on the MIDI track if playing live.

### Bitwig Studio

1. On your **audio source track**, insert **Evoke** as an audio effect.

<figure><img src="/files/lMgcgDFACY6mATSSSmrd" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2. Create a new **Instrument track**. In its **OUT** routing option, set the destination to your audio source track (the one with Evoke on it).

3. Inside **Evoke**, set the **Global Mode** to **MIDI Track / MIDI Instrument**.

<figure><img src="/files/KLmP9e1TWAiEVt9bgTs0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

4. Play a MIDI clip or perform on your MIDI keyboard. The MIDI will now be routed through Evoke and processed by your audio source.
